NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Week 2 of the Tennessee high school football season still sat mostly outside region play, but Friday night stopped feeling like a dress rehearsal.
Rockvale narrowly defeated Station Camp 31-30 on a two-point conversion attempt that fell short in the final seconds. Oakland traveled to Ohio and secured a convincing 50-20 win. After suffering a loss in Week 1, Riverdale responded with a dominant 45-3 victory over Father Ryan. Hendersonville edged out Smyrna 29-28 in overtime. Throughout the state, the teams expected to compete in December showcased their potential, while a significant number of one-score games left the rest of the bracket with valuable film but little comfort.
Most games were played on Friday, August 28, with a few taking place on Thursday. The records remain early in the season, and the game footage is just beginning to emerge.
Game Summaries
Rockvale 31, Station Camp 30 This matchup was the Rutherford County Game of the Week, and it concluded very differently from last year’s encounter. In 2025, Station Camp narrowly escaped with a 32-31 victory over Rockvale thanks to a late touchdown and a two-point conversion. However, this time, Station Camp had a chance to win in the final moments. Quarterback Colton Overbey threw a touchdown pass with just 15 seconds remaining, bringing Station Camp within one point. On the two-point conversion attempt—an elaborate trick play involving tailback Cayden Moore—the pass was intercepted. Rockvale managed to recover the onside kick, securing a 2-0 start to their season.
The key difference in this game was Rockvale’s formidable backfield. Romeo George had an outstanding performance, rushing 15 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns, with runs of 47, 26, and 65 yards. His final touchdown, scored roughly seven minutes into the fourth quarter, increased the score to 31-24, forcing Station Camp to execute a two-minute drill rather than play conservatively. Jamarcus Brown contributed with 11 carries for 100 yards, bringing his total to 170 yards and two touchdowns over the first two weeks.
“It’s a great feeling, with both of them sharing the workload,” Rockvale coach James Counce said to Cecil Joyce of the DNJ, praising his players. “They’ve embraced their roles well.”
George, who missed last season due to injury, expressed his determination: “This year I’m coming for it all. Coming back from injury was a long process, but I kept buying into the team.”
Station Camp (1-1) moved the ball effectively. Overbey completed 22 of 36 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough. Rockvale’s running game proved decisive in this tightly contested matchup. This win marked Rockvale’s first 2-0 start since 2021, the year the program made its inaugural playoff appearance.
Oakland 50, Centerville (Ohio) 20 Oakland aimed for a convincing win rather than a nail-biter, and they secured a solid road victory. After dominating CPA 56-7 in their opener—highlighted by junior running back Jacob Vaughn’s 193 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yard sprint—Oakland traveled to Centerville and won decisively. Centerville entered the game 0-1 after a loss to Lakota East and left 0-2. Oakland improved to 2-0 and remains a top contender in Class 6A public schools.
The Patriots scored consistently throughout the game, preventing it from becoming competitive. Coach Kevin Creasy’s team has now recorded victories over a DII-AAA playoff team and an out-of-state opponent within eight days. They will face a different challenge when they play Smyrna next week, as that matchup will carry different expectations than their encounter with Hendersonville.
Blackman 47, Cane Ridge 0 (Thursday) Blackman kicked off the week a day early and dominated, leading to a quick conclusion before halftime. Quarterback Chase Bell completed 6 of 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Micah Nance rushed for 91 yards and two scores on seven carries. Brycen Mitchell caught four passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Blackman (2-0) never trailed in the game, forcing Cane Ridge—a prior Week 1 winner over Wilson Central—to struggle offensively against Blackman’s defense.
The shutout demonstrated Blackman’s strength as they now prepare for a significant challenge: Riverdale will visit on September 4 in their Region 3-6A opener, which both teams are looking forward to.
Riverdale 45, Father Ryan 3 After a disappointing 19-14 loss to Knox Catholic in their opener, Riverdale responded emphatically with a dominant performance, scoring 45 points while allowing only a field goal from Father Ryan. The Warriors improved to 1-1, moving past the previous week's defeat. Notably, former Titans coach Mike Vrabel was present to support his son, Tyler, who serves as a volunteer assistant for the Irish team. With this win, Riverdale showed their strength against a DII program, while Father Ryan fell to 1-1 and will host McCallie next. Riverdale will face Blackman, a game that has been highlighted by both coaching staffs since the non-region schedule was crafted.
Hendersonville 29, Smyrna 28 (OT) Smyrna is now 0-2, with both defeats by a single point. After losing 21-20 to Brentwood in Week 1, they faced Hendersonville in an overtime thriller but fell 29-28. Hendersonville improved to 1-1 after losing their opener 28-24 against Gallatin. Smyrna's next challenge will be against Oakland.
This daunting challenge comes as Smyrna has played two closely contested games without securing a victory. Their performances suggest they can compete with the best in the midstate, but the standings will reflect their need to finish games and secure wins.
